Buhari, the Change Agenda, and the Nigerian Diaspora
“I am for everybody and nobody,” President Muhammadu Buhari proclaimed as he reigned in a new era for the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The retired Nigerian army general and former dictator, promotes the “Change Agenda” for Nigeria. Is he the change agent that Nigeria has been longing for? Will he change Nigeria for the better? In times like these, honest, principled, and visionary leaders could make or break a nation. Leaders in nations with weak institutions have limitless possibilities to advance or destroy nations, while leaders in nations with strong institutions have checks and balances that limit their powers. Nigeria is a nation with weak institutions and Buhari has limitless possibilities to change the trajectory of Nigeria for better or for worse.
If history is prologue, then we already have a preview to Buhari’s “Change Agenda”. But if we don’t, we at least have a case study of the Nigerian Change Agenda in real time. We, the Diaspora follow the ‘Change Agenda’ because it affects us and we care about it. And if the only thing that’s constant is change, here we go…
